Abstract. The formation of a child’s personality takes place under the influence of the social institution of the family. The primary agents of socialization are the parents, especially the mother. It is she who largely implements the role of a home educator and lays the foundations for a model of her child’s future behavior. The purpose of this study is to analyze the image of the mother in popular Russian films of two periods among modern viewers – Soviet and modern Russian. The mother’s image is viewed through the prism of representing the ideals and principles of family education in the context of the socio-cultural and historical features of a particular social system. The main research method is content analysis. I would like to note that the number of films on this topic is huge, which indicates that the image of the mother was and remains relevant. According to the results of the study, it is shown that in Russian cinema, motherhood is most often presented to the viewer as the highest form of love and care for their children, and mothers are strong-minded women who can sacrifice themselves in many ways for the comfort and well-being of children. They act in the functional role of protection, support, and are able to guide the child on the right path in his life. But there is also a tendency to invert, significantly differentiate the image of the mother – from idealization and heroization to criticism and even sarcasm, from caring to anxiety, from married to divorced, single mothers and cuckoo mothers. The inversion of the mother’s image is more often seen in modern Russian than in Soviet cinema. This reflects the growth of crisis trends in the institution of the family, individualistic values, and the diversity of principles, approaches, and methods used in family education.

Keywords: mother, mother’s image, family upbringing, feature film.
