Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the process of organizing physical education and sports classes, ensuring the formation of universal competencies, as a set of individual characteristics of students contributing to high achievements. The analysis of studies on the designated problem, supplemented by the author’s position, allowed us to conclude that the technology of project activities has significant potential in the formation of universal competencies in students. This circumstance was proven on the basis of an empirical study that was conducted at the psychological and pedagogical faculty of the North Ossetian State University named after K. L. Khetagurov. The object of the study is the educational process in physical education and sports classes for students of non-physical education profiles. The subject of the study is the process of forming universal competencies of students by means of project activities in physical education and sports classes. One of the means of the most effective implementation of the process of forming universal competencies of students is the technology of project activities. In the process of developing universal competencies, students acquire not only a large volume of academic knowledge, but also the skills to apply this knowledge both in professional activities and in life. In the conditions of the modern information society, the importance of universal competencies in the system of higher education is obvious. This is confirmed by the analysis of a fairly large volume of research reflecting the designated problem. The organization of physical education and sports classes at the university based on traditional teaching methods and tools will not ensure the proper level of physical fitness of students and will not meet the requirements for a university graduate put forward by educational standards.
