Abstract. The preservation of traditional values is the most important task of Russian society. Some of these values – altruism, creative mutual assistance, gratuitousness – are embodied in volunteerism (volunteerism), the centers of which are institutions of higher and secondary education, and the subjects are representatives of the student body. Therefore, it is important to study the attitude of Russians towards student volunteering. Based on the results of an empirical study, the article analyzes the ideas of Moscow residents of various age groups about volunteerism and their experience of participating in volunteer practices. It is shown that in the ideas about the mission of volunteerism, the orientation towards spirituality turned out to be slightly higher than the orientation towards society (due to the opinion of older respondents). It is recorded that the prosocial motives of volunteering prevail over the expected altruistic ones. This determines the potential of volunteerism in the movement of Russian society from social disunity, atomization to biogenic collectivism. It is noted that respondents often chose opposite motives for volunteering – altruistic, prosocial, and selfish. This is determined by the degree of anomie, the blurring of the respondents’ value orientations. The answers of the respondents about the functions, mission and motives of volunteerism recorded the specifics of specific cultural and historical conditions of socialization of the age groups of the respondents. It was revealed that in some areas of volunteering, representatives of all age groups manifest themselves in the same way, that is, young people no more than adults and the elderly. It has been determined that students who are just studying are more likely to show a delay in entering into social relations through volunteerism than those who study and work. In general, respondents show a positive attitude towards volunteering. This reflects the degree of preservation of the traditional collectivist sociocultural code for Russians (to a greater extent – among the elderly).
