Abstract. In the modern world such industry as energy plays a key role in the economic development of the country and welfare of its population. Energy policy is one of the priority areas of the European Union (EU) and the EU strives to ensure the energy security of its member states, diversify energy sources and reduce dependence on energy imports. In this article, the author analyzes the period from 2010 to 2020 and assesses it as quite dynamic and interesting for the study, as there is a gradual change in the course of energy policy from building an energy dialogue between the EU countries and Russia to the gradual “pushing back” of Russia from the number of importing countries and reducing its share in the EU energy market through diversification of supplier countries and changing routes, as well as through increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. One of the key issues of energy security for the EU is the diversification of energy sources and the author also pays considerable attention to this aspect in the article. In this regard, the EU actively supports the development of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy. In addition, the EU pays attention to the development of nuclear energy and reduction of steam emissions. Special attention is paid to the challenges facing energy policy. These include the EU’s dependence on energy imports, as well as geopolitical risks associated with instability in energy production regions. The results of this paper can be useful in assessing the EU energy policy in relation to energy importing countries, as well as in developing conceptual approaches to the principles of energy security and the factors that can ensure it and extrapolate them to other countries, considering regional specifics and characteristic features of economic development and political processes in the region.

Keywords: energy security, energy resources diversification, energy dependence coefficient, energy market in the EU, renewable energy sources.
