Abstract. The relevance of synonymy in modern linguistic realities is beyond doubt. Synonyms cause certain difficulties due to the peculiarity of their meanings, close but not identical, as well as stylistic characteristics, which can often be incomprehensible to the learner. In accordance with the above, special attention should be paid to synonymy, the characteristics of this linguistic universal in the Russian language should be considered, and some comparative manipulations should be performed to reveal the essence of Russian synonymy. It is knowledge of the intricacies of synonyms, the ability to use them at the right time and in the right place that allows us to speak of fluency in any language. Synonymous connections permeate the entire linguistic system, coming into contact with other types of relationships of lexical units. The problem of synonymy is one of the most important in linguistic semantics, despite theoretical research and practical compilation of dictionaries of synonyms. A language system can have several signifiers for one signified. Synonyms introduce subjectivity, as well as nuances, into the characteristics of a particular concept. The relevance of the work lies in the urgent need for a qualitative study of synonymy in modern linguistic realities, in revealing the features of stylistic synonyms that are widely used in speech. The subject of the study is the features of various synonyms of the Russian language, as well as aspects of their study. The novelty of the study lies in the development of a more comprehensive definition of modern synonyms in the Russian language, as well as recommendations for their classification. The practical significance of the study is represented by the possibility of using the materials and recommendations specified in the work in the educational process and linguistic research practices.
Keywords: synonymy, typology of synonyms, comparison, definitions, linguistic categories, development.
