Abstract. The work is devoted to the study of the design and mapping of the historical and genetic type of settlements. The territory of the Tomsk region was considered as an example. The article considers theoretical material on the topic of ethnographic maps. The main cartographic elements that are used for their compilation are considered. For example, a map of the Tomsk region was compiled, and the method of historical and ethnographic zoning was used to compile it. The main plot load of this type of map is given by the iconic way of designations, where the color of the icon contour reflects the dominant nationality of the settlement, the date of foundation, then the color of the icon is the nationality of the people who founded the settlement, and the symbol placed on the icon indicates how the settlement was founded. Also, the content of this map includes information on toponyms, abandoned or destroyed villages and the name of village councils is indicated. The problem of using ethnographic maps is important, and no less connected with the history of the level of education of different years, since the requirements for the cartographic literacy program for schoolchildren of different times have repeatedly changed or adapted to a new generation with new views and other social needs. Toponyms of any nation are unique, interesting and instructive for the inhabitants of the region, they contribute to fostering love for their native land, respect for our ancestors, historical and cultural monuments. In the toponymic nomenclature, terms denoting various types of settlements occupy a significant place: villages, towns, fortresses. The terms of dwellings and buildings, structures of economic, guard, military and other significance played a huge role in the formation of toponyms. This work is devoted to their study.
