Abstract. In connection with the increasing role of educational work in educational institutions of higher education and legislative initiatives in the field of state youth policy, studies of the activities of such a form of student activity as student associations are becoming relevant. In this article, the purpose of the study is to consider the educational role of student associations in the historical and pedagogical context in the second half of the XX – beginning of the XXI century. To analyze the experience of student associations, the period under study is divided into two semantic blocks – from 1958 to 1991 in the USSR and from 1992 to 2020 in the Russian Federation, in which similar and different educational components are distinguished, implemented in the activities of student associations. Priority directions of educational activity are identified: ideological and educational work with young people in the second half of the XX century and patriotic education at the beginning of the XXI century. Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that regardless of external socio-political factors, changes in legislation and priorities of educational work with young people in higher educational institutions (educational organizations of higher education), student associations in the second half of the XX – beginning of the XXI century retained the educational function. Due to the increasing relevance of the activities of student associations and the growth in the number of their participants, for a comprehensive consideration of the educational potential of student associations, it is necessary to investigate the previous experience of their activities to identify effective components that can be transformed to meet the existing needs at the present time.
