Abstract. The functions of higher education in the context of the digital transformation of society are considered. It is noted that informatization is one of the important trends in education in the present, which, in turn, causes significant changes in all aspects of the educational process. The purpose of our work is to study the transformation of the functions of higher education in modern Russian realities. The consideration of the problem was based on the results of an initiative targeted sociological study among students in Russia, conducted through the Google Forms Internet platform. As part of the survey, the implementation of the functions of higher education was considered, as well as the assessment by students of the educational process in the context of the forced transition to a distance format during the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, a database on daily use of the Internet was additionally analyzed. The results of the study conducted by the authors showed that if applicants note the priority of the function of knowledge translation, then students no longer mark it as the main one. The Internet as a source of information provides many opportunities for obtaining the necessary knowledge, and young people believe that the information they are given at the university, although it has undeniable academic value, is not unique. Another trend in education that has a direct impact on its functions is computerization. The introduction of information technologies into the educational process leads to changes in the forms and methods of teaching and transforms the functions of socialization and social control. The novelty of the study lies in identifying the features of the implementation of the functions of higher education in a pandemic and distance learning. The prospect for further research lies in considering the dynamics of such changes, studying the assessments of the modern system of higher education by teachers, identifying the causes of system dysfunctions and finding the best ways to organize the educational process in a digital society. A detailed study of the practices used in the world’s leading universities can also help find solutions to the problems posed.

Keywords: functions of higher education, transformation of higher education, system of higher education in Russia, educational process, distance learning.
