Abstract. This article reveals the actual problem of modern education — the topic of distance learning. Since distance learning from the current year 2020 can rightfully be considered an integral part of all education in General. The article contains the main terms and definitions on which the introduction of distance learning is based, the characteristic features, advantages and disadvantages of distance education are considered. A brief description of the principles of distance learning is given. The main role of the Internet information technology system is shown. It is noted that these technologies can significantly diversify the educational process and ensure better assimilation of various knowledge obtained in the classroom, comprehensively solve emerging educational and socio-educational problems, optimally use the various resources available, choose the most effective and develop new technologies and models for solving emerging socio – pedagogical urgent problems. It also reveals the possibilities of using distance learning during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Various electronic platforms for conducting distance learning are considered, and their distinctive advantages, for example, such as simultaneously teaching many people who are geographically far from each other. It is concluded that distance learning is the main form of education in this period, because it has significant differences that cannot be implemented in the traditional form. The modern education system faces a global challenge — to prepare people in a timely manner for new living conditions and professional activities in a highly automated information environment.
