Abstract. The article is devoted to such a significant notion as teacher’s authority. The problem of the pedagogical authority includes it’s deep dependency on the social, political, economic context, on the changes that are taking place at any period in a constantly developing society. Saying that, it’s obvious that the teacher’s authority is one of the important conditions of a successful educational process. The scientific newness of this research is that an attempt has been made to observe the pedagogical (a teacher’s) authority from the point of view of the modern educational theory in general and the competency approach in particular. The purpose of the research was to find out personal and professional qualities and competencies which are the base of the modern higher school teacher’s authority. The author gives the review of foreign and home investigations devoted to the teacher’s authority, modern methods of its research and diverse approaches to the description of its types, conditions of its development, its components. Also, the article gives the description of the methods which allow to discover personal and professional qualities and competencies making a higher school teacher authoritative according to the opinions of modern higher school students. The results of the author’s research the purpose of which was to find out personal and professional qualities and competencies consisting the base of a modern higher school teacher’s authority are given in the article. The results of the research include the review of the qualities received with the help of the incomplete phrases method, comparative and correlative analyses of the data, giving possibility to observe the association of attributes in the model of professional personality of higher school teacher, distinguish the most considerable of these associations. The results of the research allow to derive the base structure of a modern higher school teacher’s authority.
