Abstract. The article analyzes the features of professional self-determination of high school students living in a large industrial city and village. The main factors (motives) that influence the choice of profession for high school students are presented. In the study, the “Choice” the methodology was used, which allows to identify professional plans, motives of high school students, and the methodology of J. Golland to determine the professional type of personality. An analysis of the choice of high school students has revealed a wide variety of motives that affect the effectiveness of the process of professional self-determination. Along with such motives as the nature of work for senior pupils of the city school, psychological motives, such as the possibility of professional growth, career, moral satisfaction with work and the possibility of continuous training, are of great importance. For rural school students, factors of a socio-economic nature are important – a decent level of remuneration and demand on the labor market. It has been revealed that the leading professional personality type among students in the 9th grade of a rural school is the realistic or “masculine” type, oriented to the present with developed motor skills and spatial imagination. Among the 11th grade students of both schools, the social and conventional types prevail, characterized by pronounced social skills (ability to communicate, a desire for leadership, the need for numerous social contacts) and having the ability to structured activities, working according to instructions, certain algorithms, and digital information. The main reason for students leaving after grade 9 is the fear of passing the exam. The main argument for obtaining secondary vocational education is the possibility of acquiring a sought-after profession in a fairly short time. However, the problem of the shortage of personnel of the necessary qualifications in Russia is still acute.

Keywords: factors, motives for choosing a profession, professional self-determination, high school students, career guidance, professional personality type.
