Abstract. The purpose of this article is to identify the features of the cartographer profession, its relevance and importance at the present time, the positive and negative sides of this specialty. The article reflects the modern requirements for professional qualities, which must have a specialist cartographer. In order to more fully disclose the essence of the issue, the average salary of a cartographer in some regions of Russia, the average income of a cartographer in various organizations of the country are considered. Also considered in detail the Universities of Russia, which is preparing for the specialty 05.03.03. “Cartography and Geoinformatics”. As one of the main problems in the field of training a cartographer, it should be noted that in the XXI century maps are produced mainly in electronic format, using GIS technologies. Technical means on the one hand accelerate the process of creating maps, facilitate the work of the cartographer, and on the other hand one person can perform the whole complex of works on creating maps, a large amount of work in a small amount of time, which reduces the value of this profession. Despite all the existing problems, this profession is in demand, due to the rapid obsolescence of cartographic material that requires timely adjustments and updates. The materials of the article are aimed not only at increasing interest in the cartographer’s profession, awakening the reader’s love for geographical Sciences, bringing school geography closer to life.
