Abstract. The processes of formation and development of national and civic identity of students in a multi-ethnic society, which are an important aspect of its sustainable development, are considered. The sustainable development of the multinational Russian community largely depends on the national and civic identity of all peoples of the Russian Federation (RF) that has been formed. The urgency of this problem is shown by studying the folk traditions of indigenous peoples of Siberia (Altaians, Buryats, Tuvans, Khakas, Yakuts (Sakha)). The description of the basic characteristics of these ethnic groups is given, the importance of their future pedagogical activity, which will be carried out in the multicultural environment of the Russian Federation, is updated. An analysis of scientific research for the period 1992-2004. on the problems of national and civic self-awareness, the main directions are highlighted: pre-school environment, school environment, vocational colleges environment, university environment, leisure facilities environment. A description of a research project to study the folk traditions of indigenous peoples of Siberia (Altaians, Buryats, Tuvans, Khakas, Yakuts (Sakha)) is proposed as a pedagogical basis for the development of national and civic self-consciousness of students of pedagogical universities. This project is a study on the disclosure of this problem, a presentation of its relevance and novelty, which consists in identifying and justifying the national potential of these peoples, developing methodological guidelines and conceptual and theoretical foundations, and a scientific concept for the development of national and civic self-consciousness of students of pedagogical universities. The expected results are presented, which, according to the authors, represent a significant contribution to the field of social pedagogy and ethnopedagogy, expand the scientific understanding of the development of national and civic self-consciousness of students of a pedagogical university (representatives of small nations); actualize and expand the understanding of the essence and essence of the folk traditions of the indigenous peoples of Siberia (Altaians, Buryats, Tuvans, Khakas, Yakuts (Sakha)), their use in social and educational practice.
