Abstract. This article reveals the term “innovation” as the main unit in the development of the economy in modern times, its functions and types. The concept of the innovation process, the stages of this process and its participants are considered. The regularity of the influence of entrepreneurial activity on the level of competitiveness of the country is revealed. Also, the article considers such a notion as “New economy” and its main components (venture business, information technologies). There is an analysis of state support for innovation activities of some developed countries, in particular the USA, China and France. The article reveals the essence of innovation management in Russia, the innovative potential and ways to improve. Also considered the significant problems of innovation management in Russia and decision of their solve.
